5 BLOODY GREAT IDEAS - June 2023
As I seem to have a little more time on my hands than usual (come on advertisers, stick with us, we are worth it!) and I am a prolific collector of web bookmarks and tabs, Im sharing some of these nuggets of TV industry tips and a few recommendations. At BNTV we love collaboration, so do share anything you like in the comments below.
1. Roy Ackerman: My top 10 tips for navigating an industry reset
A brilliant article that addresses the downturn in the industry from the esteemed Executive Producer Roy Ackerman. In summary, he gives 10 tips …
Recessions always end - …he world really isn’t coming to an end.
A reset is a good time to develop projects you really care about - Its probably time for ideas that are only ‘quite strong’ to be put aside for a while.
Appeal to an audience … As a colleague told me – a film without an audience is a joke without a punchline.
Cut your cloth …there are ways of telling great stories without spending millions.
Be nimble…there are new specialist platforms springing up all over the world
Find a reason…Ask yourself why you are really making your project.
Collaborate…If you find out there’s a competitor project, have you thought about joining forces? (this one is very close to our business plan at BNTV).
It’s not about you…Right now, it’s mostly about big industry issues (read The Streaming Book), so go easy on yourself.
Take care…Do the things you like to do – walk the dog, hang out with friends and family, read books, go and see plays and films.
Silver linings…The pipeline for all those bingeworthy scripted shows might start to slow down and raise demand for ever-ready and affordable unscripted programmes.
2. How do you create a sustainable business?
The Center for Sustainable Business Practices calls a business sustainable if it is: 1) economically viable (profit) 2) socially responsible (people) and 3) environmentally friendly (planet). Here are a couple of Apps that support sustainable business. All new to me by the way, and so good to know about… but I haven’t used them yet (disclaimer!).
ALINE offer a range of services designed to assist our clients in understanding and mitigating the environmental impact of their digital operations.
MyEarth is an energy tracking app that helps make daily energy usage more accessible. The app has a diary format where you can choose your day-to-day activities to track your carbon emissions.
JouleBug is a sustainability app that combines gaming and social media. Instead of sending you constant notifications, the app makes you update activities in the app once you take some action towards sustainability.
3. The 2023 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards Shortlist
On Friday June 16, BAFTA announced the 79 projects shortlisted for the 2023 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards.
This year’s Yugo BAFTA Student Awards welcomed 754 submissions from 103 schools across 30 countries. This next generation will be producing our TV in the near future, just blink and they will be making incredible things happen… as my kids would say “trust”.
4. A creative freelancer's guide to getting back to work after a summer break
